Everton has been tipped to sign Ben White from Brighton and Hove Albion.

Everton has been recently linked with a surprising return of John Stones to the Goodison Park as Pep Guardiola has lost faith in the 26 year old defender. Manchester City are focusing on bringing a new centre back who can partner with Aymeric Laporte and have made enquiries for Kalidou Koulibaly and Milan Skriniar.

With Stones being the most likely to player to be dumped, stories of an Everton return started to gain momentum. However, the fans have seen this transfer rumour as with a mixed eye with majority of the fans wanting the Toffees to avoid any such deal.

One thing is clear that the Merseysiders need to bolster their backline if they are to break their top six hodoo in near future. Yerry Mina may be on his way to an Everton exit and Michael Keane’s form has been fluctuating from time to time.

Enter Ben White. The 22 year old who is garnering praises in the Championship and has caught the eye of several Premier League clubs. The Englishman is on loan at Leeds United from Brighton and Hove Albion.

White has been terrific at Leeds and has played a monumental part in Leeds’ rise to the top. He has helped the Peacocks to keep 18 clean sheets, more than any other Championship side. The Brighton loanee averages 1.7 tackles, 2.4 interceptions and 2.8 clearances per 90 minutes this term. (stats via whoscored)

His impressive record has not only been observed by Premier League teams like Everton but also by pundits. Paul Robinson has tipped Everton to sign Ben White instead of facilitating a return for John Stones. The former England number 1 told Football Insider that Ben White is already better than Stones.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

"Ben White would make a lot more sense than John Stones. He is already a lot better than Stones in my opinion. I am unsure whether Stones is an Ancelotti type of player. Michael Keane and Holgate have done really well, Holgate especially. Since returning from his loan at West Brom he has been outstanding.I cannot see Stones as part of the plans at Goodison Park. There is a reason he is surplus to requirements at Manchester City and they have struggled in that position all season. They have played a 35-year-old midfielder in Fernandinho over an England international defender – that cannot be good for your confidence. For whatever reasons Pep Guardiola does not want to play him.If he wants to get into the Euro squad he needs to be playing regularly. He needs to play at his age and he will have to look elsewhere."

In my opinion, bringing back Stones isn’t a step in the right direction. When he left Finch Farm, he was bustling with confidence but with the semitone treatment and injuries, his confidence has taken a major hit.

Ben White is untested in the Premier League scene but promises to be an exciting option. If it comes down to selecting a sensational Stones return or acquiring Ben White, Everton must listen to Paul Robinson and sign the Leeds man.
