On the final day of the Premier League season, sorry Everton crashed to an embarassing 1-3 defeat to relegated Bournemouth.

The pathetic performance on Sunday summed up pretty much everything wrong with this Everton team all season long: lack of pace, passion and energy, avoidable individual errors leading to goals and too little attacking quality.

And once again Jordon Pickford showed a lack of concentration and allowed a relatively tame shot to slip under him and this will surely raise more questions about his long-term future.

To be fair I suppose you could say that the Blues had very little to play for on this last day of the season and so a lacklustre effort was perhaps not totally unexpected.

But as we’ve said many times before there is an awful lot of work to do to turn this team around. I have to say I don’t know if it’s possible to solve these problems before the new season kicks off on 12 September.

The Toffees had the chance yesterday to finish what has been a pretty miserable season on a positive note if they had delivered a good performance and won the game.

But no, instead the Blues weren’t able to do that for the fans and instead saw their impressive home record under Carlo Ancelotti come to and end as they were comfortably beaten by a team that was facing relegation when the game started.

Carlo Ancelotti went with a team playing similarly to Everton’s last outing at Sheffield United, but in one significant change he gave a start to young Italian striker Moise Kean.

Kean was one of the few bright spots in yesterday’s game. He was lively, worked hard and scored the Blues only goal after Bournemouth had taken the lead through a penalty. Lets hope that he can build on this next season, assuming he is still at Goodison Park.

One other positive was Jarrad Branthwaite who started his second consecutive match and produced another solid performance at centre-back.

Despite having a lot of the ball, Everton never controlled the game and the Cherries looked dangerous throughout.

They duly scored another goal and then a third to seal a deserved win, although it wasn’t enough to keep them up as other results around the country sent the Cherries down.

So that was the 2019-20 season finally over and done with, its certainly not one that will be fondly remembered by Evertonians.

The Toffees finish in twelfth place, their lowest position in the Premier League in years and having failed to even gain 50 points, which is a truly pathetic outcome for the season.

Now comes the summer transfer window and a crucial opportunity for Ancelotti to bring in the players he wants and needs to improve this team.
