As Champions League returns, here are five players Everton must watch and scout.

The transfer window has opened and clubs are already going leaps and bounds to sign their targets. Everton too are making considerable moves to strengthen their squad. With the Champions League on the horizon, the competition gives a stage for players to impress and make clubs chase after them and also gives opportunities to clubs like Everton to study and watch exciting players.

The most prestigious competition in club football returns on 8th August with the remaining knockout games to be played in Portugal, as a safety measure. UEFA Champions League was indefinitely suspended when the Corona Virus was hitting a peak in Europe.

Now with the situation a lot better than what it was three months ago, it is the right time for resumption. In theory, there are only 12 clubs who will compete on the field but there will be plenty of other teams scouting talents, who excel at the grandest stage.

Everton is far off Champions League and it may take a few seasons for the Toffees to even think of playing in Europe. However, there are a few players Marcel Brands must watch and try and target.

1. Arturo Vidal

The FC Barcelona man has been the heartbeat of a midfield that looks soulless and dead. Arturo Vidal is probably the only man barring Frenkie De Jong, to infuse energy in the Barca midfield. The Chilean has asserted from time to time that he wants an important role or else he can’t be at the club.

With Miralem Pjanic arriving, the emergence of Riqui Puig and the return of De Jong from injury will further hurt Vidal’s playing time next season. Everton midfield has lacked the energy and juice which can be provided by Arturo Vidal.

The 33 year old is contracted till the summer of 2021 but is likely to move out of Barcelona should he not be considered as a crucial squad player. Vidal has the experience and the mindset of a champion, battle hardened by winning leagues across Italy, Spain and Germany. The Toffees can benefit hugely from Arturo Vidal’s Viking mentality.
