Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti has said he doesn’t need to sell to buy, but that doesn’t mean, he won’t use the sale of Jonjoe Kenny to help bring in Max Aarons.

Max Aarons of Norwich City is being considered a target for many Premier League clubs, especially after Canaries’ relegation. There is no reason for Everton to not be interested in the 20 year old. For signing Aarons, some funds need to be generated which can be through the sale of Jonjoe Kenny. Kenny still has two years remaining on his Everton deal. He feels a little bit in limbo, telling the Liverpool Echo:

"No nothing has really come from Everton, yet, he said. I want to play week-in, week-out – I’m not happy sitting on the bench."

The bench is the likely destination for the academy graduate if he stays at his boyhood club. He won’t fetch a large transfer fee and coupled with his current deal would make him quite attractive.

Kenny is valued at 8.5 million pounds and Max Aarons at 16 million by Transfermarkt. With Norwich’s relegation, Aarons’ fee is likely to drop. If Everton does buy the gifted Canary, Kenny could easily go the other way.

There are other suitors for Kenny. He spent 2019-20 on loan at Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga and manager David Wagner was impressed. Wagner wanted to keep Kenny after his loan ended, but couldn’t afford him. The club doesn’t have the financial muscle, he told Getfootballnewsgermany

David Moyes is seeking to increase his options at fullback and Kenny is one of the targets, according to the Telegraph. Moyes saw Kenny in his early days at Everton, but left before the right-back pushed into first team contention, eventually appearing 40 times.

Max Aarons is much better prospect and more versatile, too. As he can shift over to left-back if needed and Everton do need an additional left back after the retirement of club legend Leighton Baines.

Djibril Sidibe was allowed to return to Monaco after his loan spell as the Toffees didn’t use the option to make his move permanent. Which leaves a space for another right back to push current incumbent Seamus Coleman, who has also been pushed further up the pitch by Ancelotti.

The 20-year-old has had a good first season in the Premier League as he averaged  1.9 clearances, 1.4 tackles and 1.3 dribbles as well as complete 78 percent of his passes in 36 appearances, according to WhoScored.

Max Aarons has long been tipped for success. He was named to the Championship team of the season for 2018-19 as well as being named the EFL’s young player of the season.

In the end, it comes down to this, does Aarons wants to be part of a team aiming to get right back to the Premier League or does he want to follow in the footsteps of Dave Watson, another former Norwich defender who moved to Merseyside and was part of Everton’s last league title team.

Aarons is young and surely time is on his side. Playing for a legendary manager like Ancelotti and helping return Everton to its rightful place as a “big” club, must be enticing.

Jonjoe Kenny probably won’t get the same opportunity as Max Aarons, but he can still play an important role, elsewhere.
