Here are 3 transfers Everton must make to convert Everton from a mid table club to challangers for Europe.
When Carlo Ancelotti took over the reins in December 2019, Everton fans were rejoiced that a coach who has won Champions League three times may guide the Toffees to Europe. 6 months later, the harsh reality kicked in about the mediocrity of the squad. Even with a highly revered boss in Ancelotti, Europe will be distant for next couple of seasons.
A major overhaul will have to take place before the Royal Blues can consistently mount a challenge for European football. The current squad lacks quality, experience and the oomph required to reach the top six in the Premier League. It was evident even to a blind eye that Toffees midfield is the biggest area of concern.
With no ball winner in the team, Ancelotti’s side lacked control and dynamism in the middle of the park. Idrissa Gueye’s absence is hurting more than ever and a Gueye esque player is required to fine tune the midfield.
Coming to the defence, it is rather surprising how Ancelotti managed to nurse the team with just three first team centre backs. Yerry Mina’s injury problems didn’t make the quest easier but Jarrad Branthwaite’s rise did offer some respite. That being said, a centre back should be on the agenda. Gabriel Magalhaes preferably, but the saga is never ending.
The last area of surgery will be the right wing. Theo Walcott is no longer a viable choice and Alex Iwobi has done little to justify his £34 million price tag. We take a look at three signings, one in each area that will put Everton on the road to Europe.
I insist again that it won’t happen in one season, but laying foundations today will see the team grow and reach their ultimate goal tomorrow.
