Manchester United’s Europa League hero Sergio Romero should be the man Everton should chase.
A recent report from Daily Mail stated that Carlo Ancelotti is unsure whether Jordan Pickford is the best option for Everton in goal. If the Italian is mulling over selling Jordan Pickford or adding some competition to the No.1 role, he could target Sergio Romero of Manchester United.
Last season was unconvincing and shifted the narrative of Jordan Pickford being a top goalkeeper. The England shotstopper conceded a total of 56 goals in 38 Premier League games, forcing fans to ask questions on Pickford’s capabilities. A faction of Toffees supporters thinks Jordan Pickford has become careless and the reason for this complacency is the lack of competition in the goalkeeper’s department.
Jonas Lossl was sent on loan in January to Huddersfield but never looked to challenge Pickford for a starting spot. Joao Virginia is young and has potential but is too inexperienced to lead Everton between the sticks. Jordan Pickford needs to have some competition that keeps him on the toes and pushes him to perform week in week out.
Sergio Romero could be the man that can not only challenge Pickford but also replace him if need be. Metro has credited Everton with an interest in Sergio Romero, with newly promoted Leeds United also in the mix. The Sun further reported that Sergio Romero and Ben Foster remain options to replace Jordan Pickford.
In my opinion, Sergio Romero should be preferred over Ben Foster. Foster at 39 doesn’t have too much in the tank but Romero at 33 still looks sharp. The Red Devils have an interesting conundrum of their own as they try to sort the future of Dean Henderson. The 23 year old spent last season on loan at Sheffield United and turned into one of the best shotstoppers of the league.
Henderson wants to fight for first team football with David De Gea which could see Sergio Romero demote as a third choice keeper. The Argentine was a Europa League hero as Manchester United triumphed in 2016, winning the Europa league title. He was the first choice for United in their successful campaign and he repaid the faith shown in him throughout the tournament.
Since then, Romero’s journey hasn’t been rosy. The possible return of Dean Henderson further casts doubt on the Argentine’s future. A move to Everton can be a win-win situation for all parties.
The Toffees get a world class keeper who can challenge Pickford’s claim to Everton’s No.1 spot and Romero will get more playing time than what he is getting currently at Old Trafford.
In fact, if Chelsea moves to sign Jordan Pickford as they aim to end the struggles of Kepa Arrizabalaga, Sergio Romero could inherit the starting role at Goodison Park. Sergio Romero’s contract at Manchester United expires in 2021 and signing him won’t be an issue.
His arrival will help Everton solve a key issue and also offer assurance to Carlo Ancelotti. Signing Sergio Romero can be a smart deal which is the need of the hour in today’s market.
