Hot on the heels of Micheal Keane agreeing a new five-year deal with Everton, teenage forward Anthony Gordon has also put pen to paper on a new contract.

Gordon got his breakthrough into the Everton team at the back end of last season as he impressed Carlo Ancelotti with his attitude and ability. His performances weren’t brilliant but they were one of the few bright spots as the Toffees season disintegrated after the restart.

Now the youth team product has got his reward with a new contract, which again like Keane, is a five-year deal tying him to Goodison Park until the middle of the decade.

Gordon fitted pretty seamlessly into the Blues team when he got his chance and despite a few shaky moments, looked like he belonged in the first-team almost from the off.

The 19-year-old looked very comfortable playing wide on the left and more centrally although he does seem better suited to being a little wider where he has more space to get on the ball.

He’s obviously a very young player and has much still to learn and add to his game. However, there certainly seems plenty of talent to work with.

He’s worked hard to beef himself up physically, works hard off the ball and has good technique and skill with a fine left foot.

He made one assist in his 4 starts. If he averaged something like that over a full season he would possibly reach double figures in assists over the course of a full Premier League season. That would be a pretty good level of production.

The emergence of Gordon and his continued development, means that Everton hopefully shouldn’t need to invest in bringing in another player to operate on that side of the pitch.

Obviously it’s still early days in his career and we can’t be sure he will fulfill that potential. We’ve had too many talented young players not ultimately make the grade to be too confident of that!

So long-term let’s hope he won’t be one of those and instead will be the player to nail down that place in the team.

He’s versatility will also help as the Blues bring in new attacking midfielders/forwards. Gordon can play in a 4-4-2 or on one side of a central three perhaps.
