Everton flop Gylfi Sigurdsson could be on his way to MLS after DC United have shown interest in the Iceland international.
Wayne Rooney returned to Everton, his boyhood club in 2017, before setting sails for Major League Soccer in the United States of America. The Englishman played two seasons with DC United before eventually returning to England with Derby County. Everton flop Gylfi Sigurdsson could soon follow the same path with DC United keen to sign the 30 year old.
According to The Athletic, DC United have held talks with Gylfi Sigurdsson over a potential transfer to MLS. The MLS side has approached the 30 year old’s representatives to discuss a move to USA, although, when will the transfer take place remains to be seen as he remains contracted with Everton till the summer of 2022.
The arrivals of James Rodriguez, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure will be a matter of concern for Gylfi Sigurdsson as he faces a major reduction in game time this season. The 30 year old earns £100,000 a week in wages and the Toffees want to get him off the books to free up the wage budget.
Sigurdsson has been a big flop. Apart from an impressive first season, his displays in the Royal Blue shirt have gone downhill ever since. Especially, during the last season, his creative slump was massive and it embodied Toffees’ problems in the middle of the park.

Should DC United manage to sign Gylfi Sigurdsson from Everton, the Toffees will be over the moon in getting a significant amount off their wage bill. He is one of the highest paid players at the club and his sale will lighten the load on the club finances. Allan and James Rodriguez are pocketing a handsome amount of salaries and the Royal Blues can’t simply afford having a player like Sigurdsson earning high wages, given his minimal contribution.
Moving away from Goodison seems to be the best bet for Gylfi Sigurdsson. The 30 year old is not a key player in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans but at DC United, he can be the chief engineer in the middle of the park. DC United are craving to win the MLS but have failed on a number of occasions. Should Sigurdsson take a similar path to Rooney and move to DC United, he can deliver some silverware to the Washington DC side.
