News on social media has just broken, which indicates that Everton may have missed out on signing Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero as Aston Villa have had an £8 million bid for the player accepted.

This news has come on a site called United Journal Twitter, so to put it mildly it might not necessarily be certain that a deal is done and obviously Everton might still be in the race for the Argentina international.

The Toffees have been repeatedly linked with the United goalkeeper and are supposedly keen to bring the player in and with good reason.

Romero would provide real competition to Jordan Pickford who frankly has used up most, if not all, of his credits with probably the great majority of Blues supporters after a string of terrible error-strewn performances during the last season.

High profile errors in several matches during the last campaign that led to goals and dropped points, together with his poor concentration and odd behaviour and attitude, has certainly not endeared him to Evertonians.

He finished 24th among Premier League keepers in terms of the number of saves made last season with a 63% save percentage. That’s a pretty poor return for England’s supposed first choice number one!

Pickford’s form has steadily declined over the past few seasons and there is little indication that it will substantially improve either in the future. Perhaps more competition would force him to focus and work hard to improve his form. but I’m not sure.

So if the Blues can bring in another keeper who will push him hard or replace him outright, then it must certainly be considered once the midfield signings are sorted out.

If Romero goes to Villa and I doubt Everton will offer that kind of money for the 33-year-old, then the Toffees will have to look elsewhere.

The Blues were also linked with veteran former England keeper Ben Foster. However, it seems he has signed a contract extension so won’t be going anywhere soon.

One thing that might create a possiblity is that if the midlands club get Romero, then what does that mean for Tom Heaton who has been their number one and had a good season for the Villains during the 2019-20 campaign? This led to him getting into the England squad.

Perhaps Everton could put a cheeky bid in for Heaton if Villa are going to spend that sort of money on Romero, as that means he would probably mean he will be starting..?

Heaton is 34 but for a goal keeper that’s not as significant as for an outfield player. Indeed, that’s only a year older than Romero is himself. The England keeper would certainly be an improvement on the current form of Pickford that’s for sure.
