Everton fans have a lot of expectations form new signing James Rodriguez.

2. James Rodriguez vs. Expectations

When the signing of James Rodriguez was announced, Everton fans across the world went into frenzy labelling him as the prime face of the rebuild. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. James Rodriguez is no doubt a top player who can take the Premier League by storm but this is still very early days and the Colombian is yet to smell the Premier League.

Evertonians have already set huge expectations from the 29 year old that he will be their guiding light in the darkness. The player himself will be feeling the weight of expectations already. If the Colombian does start tomorrow, he’ll have it in the back of the mind that he has to do everything possible in his power to please and win the Everton faithful.

If James Rodriguez is able to perform as per people’s expectations, people will write legends about him the whole year. However, we as fans need to understand that the transition won’t be quick. James Rodriguez is coming from a lacklustre season at Real Madrid where he often found himself either on the bench or on the treatment table.

James is Ancelotti’s adopted son and we all have a reason to believe that the Colombian will rediscover himself under the Italian. Tomorrow is a big game for Everton. It’s the performances in games like these that will determine whether the Royal Blues are real contenders for a top seven-top eight place.

Rodriguez’s biggest battle will be against the expectations that fans will have from him and more importantly he will have from himself.
