Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s rise answers Everton key question
Since the departure of Romelu Lukaku, Everton’s need for a new striker has been the topic of discussion of those in the know as well as those not in the know.
Yes, it is early in the season, but it’s becoming increasingly obvious Dominic Calvert-Lewin is the striker the Toffees have needed and wanted.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has confidence or he wouldn’t have chosen to wear the most iconic number (9) in the club’s history. And so far this season, Calvert-Lewin is scoring at a rate that would eclipse club legend Dixie Dean’s single season mark (60 in 1927.) It’s hyperbole at it’s most extreme to extrapolate DCL’s start (4 goals in 2 games) over an entire season.
If he matches Romelu Lukaku’s 26 goals from 2016-17 that will be a great season. Despite DCL’s 15 goals last season, the Toffees have been linked with other strikers.
According to the Telegraph, Everton has shown interest in Valencia striker Maxi Gomez, who has scored 42 goals in 106 La Liga games. Gomez is 24.
At the other end of the spectrum, age-wise is 35-year-old Fernando Llorente. Llorente played under Ancelotti at Napoli and so he was linked with Everton. At 6-foot-5, Llorente has target man written all over him. However, Ancelotti believes there is more to Llorente and his game than just his height.
He told Tuttomercatoweb:
"But there is the risk of confusing him (as a one-dimensional target man). Llorente, while being tall, is a footballer. He is one who is complete."

Dominic Calvert-Lewin who partnered Richarlison in Everton’s 4-4-2 system last season. Both finished with 15 goals.
Ancelotti’s summer purchases have resulted in a change in formation to 4-3-3 with Calvert-Lewin staying in the middle with Richarlison in the left and new arrival James Rodriguez on the right wing.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has benefited from the 4-3-3 as he has scored four of the six league goals. The Royal Blues have options if anything should happen to the 23 year old.
Richarlison could move into the centre forward role and Anthony Gordon or Bernard would play on the left. Moise Kean,20, is still on the books and scored from a penalty, in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup victory against Salford City.
Despite impressing for Juventus as a teenager, Kean hasn’t impressed many at Goodison. Ancelotti isn’t one of them, he told the Liverpool Echo
"I think he played a good game, he was involved in a lot of offensive situations, he scored the penalty. But I don’t know how he felt after the penalty."
Everton may bring in another striker. However, he won’t take Calvert-Lewin’s slot.
