With nine goals in their first three games of the season, Everton may appear to be sorted when it comes to firepower for the upcoming season. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has made a blistering start to the campaign, aided by a hat-trick of real poacher’s goals against West Bromwich Albion this past weekend, and he will be hoping to continue his trend of improving on his goal tally with every passing season.
Elsewhere, James Rodriguez and Moise Kean have already opened their own goalscoring accounts this season and will hope to rival Everton’s number nine for the club’s top scorer spot come to the end of the season. Richarlison is also a goal threat for the Blues, although the Brazilian is yet to find the net in his two appearances so far.
Everton’s midfield also offers more scoring options this season and Ancelotti will be hoping that the squad won’t have to rely heavily on Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin to stick the ball in the net, as they did in the previous campaign.
The issue in Everton’s front line comes in the fact that there doesn’t appear to be anyone else in the squad who can offer the same type of threat that Calvert-Lewin does.
While there is plenty of goalscoring threats in the squad, the Blues don’t have an obvious back-up to Calvert-Lewin when it comes to a physical presence leading the line and holding the ball up for the supporting players.
Moise Kean has struggled when playing in a lone striker role and looks far more comfortable when he has a strike partner or comes in off the wing.
Therefore, Marcel Brands may be looking to bring someone in this mould to the club before the window closes, as the Blues could really struggle to continue their current style of play if Calvert-Lewin is sidelined.
A sensible option to bring in would be Joshua King, who was recently relegated with Bournemouth and should be available for a reasonable price.
King would offer back-up to Calvert-Lewin in the centre forward role and is also capable of playing in the wider areas. The Norwegian striker has proven he can perform in the Premier League and would be a versatile option to have in Ancelotti’s squad.
