Everton’s search for a winger continues as they retract their interest in the 24-year old World Cup winner, Thomas Lemar.

It would seem Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti is still far from done when it comes to signing more players this season, but he needs to pick the right man for the right price. And apparently, according to Le 10 Sport it now seems that Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Lemar isn’t that man.

Having had an impressive time with Monaco, Thomas Lemar was snatched up by Atletico Mardrid in 2018 for the huge sum of £52.7 million. With that kind of price tag a certain level of football was expected. Sadly though, this never came to fruition and the Frenchman fell further and further down the pecking order for manager Diego Simeone.

For whatever reason, the winger did not live up to the hype that was created about him. This could be down to not fitting into the new country, not getting along with teammates etc. This lack of quality produced by Thomas Lemar certainly dropped his price tag and is now valued around €25-30m, which, for an out of form player, seems very steep.

This seems like a ploy from the Spanish side to recoup some of their losses on such an expensive player and something that definitely had the affect of making Everton retract their offer, especially when you consider Thomas Lemar has a weekly wage demand of £107k.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

Looking at some of the business Everton have done over the course of the transfer window, Doucoure cost £20 million, Allan £21 million and Rodriguez was free. These three players are all in great form and have a great performance behind them to back it up. Why then, would the Toffees want to spend up to €30 million on a player who has been so out of form for a while? It just doesn’t seem like a smart business move.

That being said, Wolverhampton seem very interested as their manager Nuno Espírito Santo looks to add some creativity to his already bolstered squad this season. TBR Football have said Wolves believe he is young enough to rediscover his best form.

Thomas Lemar could have been a great signing for Everton, under previous form. But with this now somewhat lacking, it would be a risk the team are obviously unwilling to take. They have a great unbeaten run of 5 wins out of 5 in all competitions and they don’t want to do anything to jinx that.

Everton are still searching for some more force in their squad with the rumours of Crystal Palace’s Wilfred Zaha constantly cropping up and now there have been reports of Napoli offering the Merseyside team their centre forward Arkadiusz Milik. Lets keep our ears to the ground to see how both of those unfold.
