Everton are plotting a loan deal for AS Roma goalkeeper Pau Lopez to provide competition to Jordan Pickford.

The shortcomings of Jordan Pickford have been evident this season too. I understand as fans, we must back the player and show support during the rough patch. However, there is no escaping the fact that Pickford’s performances have dropped constantly and if Everton aim to challenge for the top six and win trophies they need a solid keeper. There is no real competition for Pickford’s place at Goodison, but this could soon change as Everton are eyeing a loan deal for Pau Lopez of AS Roma.

Carlo Ancelotti has defended Jordan Pickford from time to time. Even after the 4-2 win against Brighton where Pickford was to be blamed for the Seagulls equalizer, the Italian defended him. My question is how long you can keep defending a player who has failed to up his game. Loss in form is one thing and making the same errors, again and again, is another.

Everton have had a bright start to their campaign. In fact, bright is an understatement. The Toffees have emphatically imposed themselves as a strong side in the opening phase of the 2020-21 season.

Ancelotti’s side is at the top of the table after 4 games, have made it to the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup. Essentially, more than results the monumental change of attitude and quality has been observed. Yet, there remains one position on the pitch where Everton is stagnant, if not going backwards.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

The position of the net-minder. Jordan Pickford is a good player and he was on top of his game say a couple of years ago but his slump in the last 12 months has been unbelievable.

The lack of competition has made Jordan Pickford complacent and a change needs to be made in between the sticks to shake Pickford and push him to find the lost form again.

I am not talking about signing a big name goalkeeper but bringing a smart solution who can keep Pickford on his toes and even replace him if the degradation continues.

Everton may have found out the right candidate in the form of AS Roma goalkeeper Pau Lopez.

According to Inside Futbol, Everton are focused to complete a loan deal for AS Roma goalkeeper Pau Lopez as he could offer competition to Pickford. It is still unclear whether Everton would want an option to buy or not but the Toffees surely are pursuing a loan deal.

Pau Lopez joined AS Roma last year from Real Betis and was directly the first choice keeper. The Spaniard played a total of 42 games last term and conceded 51 goals, keeping 10 clean sheets in total. He has not been overly terrific but has fared better and not made silly errors during games.

It is also worth noting that Pau Lopez hasn’t started a signle game this season with Antonio Mirante getting the nod ahead of the Spaniard.

A loan deal wouldn’t be a bad option and if the deal does go through on the deadline day, Everton will be successful in addressing the goalkeeper problems too in this massively successful transfer window.
