The only explanation to why Everton didn’t sign a replacement to Moise Kean on deadline day is that the Toffees are going to trust Cenk Tosun with that role.

PSG signed Moise Kean on loan just one day before the deadline day. The Italian, in his second season at Goodison, was seen as a backup to hotshot Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Earlier, Carlo Ancelotti reiterated in the press that he intends to keep Kean, insisting that the player’s future lies with Everton.

In the background, Juventus and PSG had their evergreen interest especially, Juventus. One day before the transfer deadline day, Everton announced the departure of the 20 year old on loan to PSG. The Parisiens had agreed to pay the complete wages and take Kean on loan in their attempt to find the right Edinson Cavani replacement.

Calvert-Lewin has been firing on all cylinders and has been the kingpin in the frontline. His 9 goals in 5 games make him the highest goal scorer in Europe going into the international break. His insane form has deservedly earned him an England national team call up and is expected to make a debut for the Three Lions soon.

However, with players often going on international duty there’s always a risk and fear that the player may pick up an injury. In fact, it’s a fear that constantly worries the fans. DCL is in unbelievable nick right now, whatever he’s touching is going into the goal.

But, he won’t be at the top of his game for 10 months straight. There may be dips due to overworking of the body, fatigue due to fixture congestion or if worse even an injury.

In such circumstance, Everton will need a backup striker waiting in the wings. Till Sunday, I was pretty confident that Ancelotti has trusted Kean to execute the role of a backup striker.

The loan move indicated Everton may make a late lunge on the deadline day to sign a striker. There were whispers of Arkadiusz Milik and Fernando Llorente but neither move caught any momentum.

Not signing a striker only attests one point, the role of Cenk Tosun. Of course, Tosun is currently rehabilitating from his anterior cruciate ligament injury but could be handed the responsibility of a backup striker once he is declared fit.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

The Turkish international has had a dismal last season where he was constantly below par. A loan move to Crystal Palace didn’t help as he picked the ACL injury and was shipped back to Everton. A lot of reports suggested that Tosun would be on his way to Turkey as Ancelotti doesn’t count on him.

However, Toffees’ actions in the transfer market suggest otherwise. Maybe, Everton didn’t sign a striker on purpose. Cenk Tosun has never really launched himself or imposed as a prime goal poacher, a reputation he earned in Turkey with Besiktas but he still has enough in the tank to act as a backup striker.

Perhaps, a bit of fine-tuning from Ancelotti will aid Tosun’s cause. We have seen it with the other players like Tom Davies, Bernard, Andre Gomes that a short but fruitful pre-season helped Ancelotti inject his philosophy into the players and elevate their levels.

We could see a much clinical Tosun once he gets more involved in the training sessions as he gets closer and closer to the hundred per cent recovery. Earlier, in September, Cenk Tosun cleared the air surrounding his future that he was going to stay at Everton and Ancelotti intends to keep him at Goodison.

"I worked with Ancelotti for 2-3 weeks after returning. He does not want me to leave and asks how I am doing with my recovery every day. It is early for me to return to Turkey. I need to achieve my goals first and for that to happen my priority is to make a recovery. (via Turkish Football)"

All the signs point in the direction of Tosun being given an important role of a backup to Calvert-Lewin. The Turk is expected to be back by November first week, till then, Everton are walking on a tight rope when it comes to squad depth in the striker position.
