What an Everton missed transfers XI will look like

Everton saw their multiple Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg bids rejected.

Midfield:

Central defensive midfielder: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (Tottenham Hotspur)

During the Project Restart, talks had already begun that Everton will target Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for strengthening the midfield with the Danish international wanting out of Southampton. The player refused to sign a contract extension and was stripped off the Saints captaincy. Tottenham Hotspur also had their eyes fixed on the situation and were patiently observing how things built up.

Everton saw their couple of bids in the region of £20 million rejected solely because Hojbjerg wanted to move to North London and eventually got his move. In terms of money, Everton’s offer was much better than Spurs’ offer but the player’s desire to feature for a side playing in Europe forced Saints to accept a bid of £15 million.

Central midfielder: Rafinha (PSG)

Rafinha was another midfielder linked a couple of times. According to reports, Everton had enquired about the 27 year old. To put it simply, Rafinha had no future at Camp Nou with the arrival of Ronald Koeman who was leading Barcelona’s massive overhaul.

When Thiago moved to Liverpool, reports again surfaced that Everton could be the best destination for Rafinha as the two brothers could reunite in Merseyside. Ultimately, Rafinha moved to PSG on deadline day from Barcelona.

Central midfielder: Weston McKennie (Juventus)

The wantaway Schalke midfielder was an Everton target with the Toffees supposedly running with Newcastle United, Hertha Berlin, AS Monaco and Juventus to sign the USMNT star. Juventus entered late and still managed to beat others to McKennie’s signing. It is a loan deal with an obligation to buy if he makes certain number of appearances.

Back when he was linked to the Toffees, Ancelotti and Brands were desperately hunting for midfielders and the talks of Allan weren’t making much progress. In the end, everything panned out well for Everton.
