Everton rejected the chance to sign Tottenham Hotspur keeper Paulo Gazzaniga on deadline day.
We are well past the transfer deadline day but the news keeps on emerging. All the failed deals, player enquiries and the hustle and bustle of the deadline day have been unearthed. Everton were a busy club on 5th of October with the majority of the reports linking them to a keeper who could challenge Jordan Pickford. Sergio Romero, Paulo Gazzaniga and Robin Olsen were linked.
The day began with enquiries of Pau Lopez but the discussions shifted to the Premier League with Manchester United keeper Sergio Romero and Tottenham Hotspur keeper Paulo Gazzaniga attracted attention.
As per a report from Express, Tottenham approached Everton with Gazzaniga making the Argentine available for the transfer. Spurs signed Joe Hart on a free transfer which has now seen the 28 year old Argentine slip down the pecking order. Gazzaniga is now the third choice at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium and cashing in on him was a good idea but sadly Spurs will now have to wait until January.
Arch-rivals Liverpool were also offered Gazzaniga as a replacement to Adrian. However, the Reds snubbed the deal and Toffees too rejected the option to sign him. It is true that Gazzaniga was a target for Everton but the Royal Blues were not interested in taking him permanently and hence the idea of signing him was rejected.

Instead, Everton were pushing for a loan deal but the North Londoners held firm on their demand of a permanent transfer. With no agreement between the clubs, the deal was off and the Toffees shifted their focus to bring Robin Olsen on loan from AS Roma.
Eventually, the Swede signed for the Merseysiders on a one year loan deal in the last few hours of the deadline day. Olsen, no doubt, is a decent keeper but he too has a reputation of being error prone.
It is unlikely that Olsen will replace Pickford in goal as the first choice. The Swedish international will probably act as a backup and we would seldom see him actually challenge Pickford’s claim. So the signing of the 30 year old has raised some questions.
On the other hand, Gazzaniga could have been a more reliable option. He proved his mettle last season covering in for Hugo Lloris when the Frenchman was injured. If the Toffees needed someone to contest Pickford for a long term, signing Gazzaniga wouldn’t have been a bad option at all.
Is Robin Olsen the right choice or should have the Toffees made a move for Paulo Gazzaniga?
