Details have emerged of the deal that Everton put on the table on transfer deadline day, to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

According to these reports based orginally in The Athletic, it is claimed that Everton proposed a £2 million loan fee and agreed to cover the Argentinian’s £100,000 a week wages in full.

This represented quite a considerable offer by the Toffees for the 33-year-old stopper. If true it is evidence of the strength of the Blues desire to get the player in.

But United turned it down apparently wanting a permanent deal and so Everton couldn’t get their man in before the end of deadline day. If true and given the extent of this offer, it’s no wonder his wife was so annoyed on social media!

So of course the Toffees moved onto to Roma keeper Robin Olsen who did join on loan on deadline day to become the backup to incumbent number one Jordan Pickford.

Talking of the Englishman, he put in a solid enough performance for the national team in England’s 2-1 victory over Belgium on Sunday night.

Pickford was beaten by Belgium’s penalty, which was not unexpected and hardly a bad reflection on him as no one would expect a keeper to regularly stop penalties!

As the Liverpool Echo point out, other than that he was pretty solid and composed and as so often is the case seemed to exude a confidence between the sticks for England that he doesn’t when turning out for Everton.

Gareth Southgate’s confidence in him is interesting and perhaps Carlo Ancelotti is taking a leaf out of his book, with his unstinting and very public support for the former Sunderland keeper.

So hoping to boost his sense of self-assurance and get him to produce his best for the Blues too.

But the deal outlined above for Romero, does suggest that Ancelotti was looking to hedge his bets as a move for the Argentinian would have surely meant greater compettion for Pickford.

Lets hope that if he continues as Everton number one, he can find a way to replicate the sort of performances he has produced so often for the Three Lions, during the rest of this season.
