Everton U-23 striker Ellis Simms is blossoming under David Unsworth making him a candidate to act as Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s backup.

Questions were raised as to who will act as the backup to firing Dominic Calvert-Lewin when Everton let Moise Kean leave on loan. The concerns rose when the Toffees didn’t sign a striker despite being linked to lethal frontmen like Joshua King, Arkadiusz Milik and Fernando Llorente.

Once the transfer window closed it was evidently clear that Everton are set to trust Cenk Tosun with the role of a backup striker. The Turk is currently on his road to recovery after suffering an ACL injury earlier this year. Tosun has failed to replicate the numbers in England that got him a move there.

The rise of Ellis Simms hasn’t gone unnoticed. The 19 year old has started the Premier League 2 season with a bang, scoring 5 goals in 6 games. Everton U-23 manager David Unsworth deserves some credit for polishing yet another gem.

Earlier this week, Unsworth spoke on Calvert-Lewin and his rise as one of the fiercest strikers in the Premier League right now. The U-23 boss was an integral figure in bringing the 23 year old to Everton four years ago.

"I can assure you it was nowhere near the amount of money that people mentioned at the time. I won’t say the exact fee but it was a lot less than what you just quoted.I still smile when I think about how we managed to prise him away. It was all about timing and Sheffield United were in League One and had just got a new manager. Dominic wasn’t going to play a big part in trying to get them out of League One. Unsworth always believed that Calvert-Lewin has the ability to break into the first team and four years after his transfer to Everton, he and DCL will be extremely happy how the career graph has panned out.

The 47 year old now is tasked with developing Simms who has shown immense talent and potential this year. The club hierarchy was very confident about the 19 year old and hence didn’t send him out on loan. Simms has repaid the faith shown in him with eye-catching performances all round.

His recent success is a testimony that Unsworth has dedicated a lot of time in the development of the 19 year old. With the backup striker position up for grabs, Ellis Simms needs to be given a chance to showcase his ability against the absolute best in the Premier League. Simms could also prosper from a starlet to a first team player in a matter of a new seasons if given the right guidance and opportunities.
