Calvert-Lewin was not at his lethal best.

Forwards:

James Rodriguez – 6

It was always a big IF regarding James Rodriguez playing today or not. The Colombian underwent a late fitness test and was declared fit enough to not only play but instead start the game. His outstanding quality was very sporadic in today’s game with James Rodriguez not able to control the game at his pace.

James Rodriguez ended the game holding his hamstring which is not a pretty sign for Everton. Southampton didn’t allow any room to James often piling up around him and halting his run or attempt.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 5

It’s hard to believe it’s the same man who has scored 7 goals in the last 5 league games. Calvert-Lewin looked a shadow of himself. The 23 year old just didn’t look involved enough in the game and cut a frustrated figure on the pitch.

The Englishman often links up well with James Rodriguez or Richarlison but with the Brazilian unavailable and James struggling, Calvert-Lewin looked toothless.

Alex Iwobi – 5

Alex Iwobi and heavy touches is a better story than Twilight. The Nigerian made several heavy touches which really hurt his performances today. Iwobi looked threatening at first but fizzled out as the game went on. Substituted at half time.

Substitutions:

Bernard (Iwobi 45’) – 5

Fabian Delph (Doucoure 58’) – 6

Anthony Gordon (Sigurdsson 58’) – 5.5

This is a very saddening defeat but instead of heavily criticizing the players and bashing them, it is important for the fans to get behind them.

Constructive criticism is acceptable but criticism that leads to threats and abuses are intolerable. Let’s hope that the Toffees learn from this defeat and come back even stronger against Newcastle United.
