Everton again linked with Milik

After a hectic summer of transfer activity Everton eventually added five new players by the end of deadline day as well as Niels Nkounkou just before the window opened.

One area of the team that Everton didn’t strengthen in the end was up front. The Blues decided not to sign another striker and then let Moise Kean go on loan to PSG as well.

Then during the elongated domestic window the Toffees were consistently linked with Bournemouth’s Josh King but didn’t make a move for him before the end of that period.

It seemed to me a little risky not getting another striker in given that apart from Dominic Calvert-Lewin there was only one other senior centre-forward, the injured Cenk Tosun who has never convinced he can cut it in the Premier League.

Although Calvert-Lewin has been in spectacular form so far this campaign, he struggled yesterday without the kind of service he has become used to. In addition of course he might get injured at some point in the season and then miss a number of games.

While it’s true Richarlison can also play through the middle, that takes away from his role on the left and the only other orthodox centre-forward in the squad is untried teenager Ellis Simms.

One other forward the Blues were linked with during the window is the Napoli striker Arkadiusk Milik, who is apparently surplus to requirements and available having been left out of the Italian club’s squad for this season.

Obviously Carlo Ancelotti knows the Polish player well from his time managing the Serie A club. However, although Milik was supposedly interested in a move to Goodison Park, Ancelotti was quoted as saying Milik didn’t fit in with his tactics.

I’m not sure if that is true or not as the papers so often print erroneous stories. At any rate nothing happened and Milik stayed in Italy.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

This story won’t go away though and again Everton are reportedly monitoring the situation with a view to a possible move for him in January.

Sportsmole.co.uk claim that the Toffees main rivals are fellow Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur, who like the Blues are chasing a possible top four finish and maybe more this season.

Spurs also have an England centre-forward who they are heavily reliant on for goals. If Harry Kane was injured they wouldn’t have an obvious direct replacement either.

This is all presumably just speculation and likely sourced from the player’s agent who would be keen to see some sort of competition to drive up the financial value of his charge in January.

Although I’ve no idea whether Everton are considering Milik or any other signings in January for that matter. It does seem to me that if they could get another centre-forward in for a reasonable fee as cover and an alternative for Calvert-Lewin, that would make sense.
