Tom Davies is capable of playing at right back.

Everton received a blow when they found out that captain Seamus Coleman will miss games due to a hamstring injury that forced him to come off in the Merseyside derby. The return date still seems to be uncertain, giving a selection headache to Carlo Ancelotti.

Jonjoe Kenny, Coleman’s deputy, is recovering from an injury himself, leaving Ancelotti with limited options. New signing Ben Godfrey slotted himself in the right back role for a big chunk of the game against Liverpool while also making his first start for the Toffees against Southampton as a right back.

Godfrey showed early signs of promise against the Reds in the Merseyside derby. He isn’t a traditional right back but did a respectable job covering for Coleman. His strong performances against Liverpool led him to start a game against Southampton where he constantly struggled to keep up with Nathan Redmond.

The shortcomings have been exposed which clearly has indicated that Godfrey may not be the best stop gap solution. If Ancelotti is open to experimenting, Tom Davies should get a chance at right back.

Davies has had a lot of doubters and he has not done something extraordinary so far to win back the support of Everton faithful. He is still under progress who is trying to refine his skills with each passing game.

The 22 year old displayed grit and solidity against Brighton before the International break. Davies began the game in the holding midfield role, in absence of Allan but was forced to slot into the right back role when Coleman picked up a knock.

In 32 odd minutes he played at right back, Davies showed confidence and cool nerves despite playing out of position. With Coleman’s return uncertain, Everton have a tricky puzzle to solve before the Newcastle United game. Ancelotti can go for a conservative option, bringing centre back Godfrey back at right back or he can experiment based on the previous success attained and use Davies.

Deploying the 22 year old may be a controversial pick if things go south but with Davies showing immense promise, it is worth trying.
