Questions can be raised over Jonjoe Kenny’s long term future with transfer links to Emerson Royal and Djed Spence.

Everton’s right back department is led by Captain Seamus Coleman and Everton academy graduate Jonjoe Kenny acts as his deputy. It was an intriguing bar debate on who would be Coleman’s successor as the Irishman reaches the twilight of his career. Kenny returned from a successful loan spell at Schalke but many thought the 23 year old isn’t good enough to be Coleman’s heir.

Nonetheless, Everton didn’t sign any new right back nor did they part ways with Kenny. Ancelotti has shown confidence in Kenny but recent transfer talk suggests that his long term future at Goodison could be in doubt.

Everton have been linked with two young, flourishing right backs in the last couple of days. Middlesbrough player Djed Spence and Barcelona man Emerson have seen their name associated with Everton.

Spanish media outlet Sport claims that Barcelona will sell Emerson after the arrival of Sergino Dest. The USMNT international arrived at Camp Nou from Ajax, raising questions whether Emerson is in long term plans of Barca or not. AC Milan, Everton and Newcastle are interested in the Brazilian’s services. Back in the summer, it was also claimed that Everton made an £18 million bid for the 21 year old.

Emerson is on loan at Real Betis and has caught many by surprise by his attacking quality as a full back. The Brazilian scored 3 goals and provided 6 assists last term for the Los Verdiblancos.

TEAMtalk reported that Middlesbrough right back Djed Spence has attracted interest from Premier League clubs after a shining start to his season. Newcastle United, Everton and Wolves are considering a January swoop for the 20 year old defender.

Despite the recent injury niggles, Coleman has started the season on a strong note. However, the same cannot be said about Kenny. It is true that the 23 year old has been given limited chances to prove his abilities but in the games he’s featured so far, he hasn’t looked a seamless addition to the side.

Everton will need to find an adept successor to Coleman. The process needs to begin sooner rather than later. As mentioned earlier, Ancelotti has backed Kenny to succeed but the Englishman needs to demonstrate his true talent before the clock starts running out.

The idea behind having a young full back in developing stages will be to let him learn under the umbrella of Coleman and once the Irishman hangs up his boots, the responsibilities can be passed fully to the deputy full back.
