New Bremer links make no sense for Everton

In a week with attention focused on the international fixtures, there are fresh reports that Everton still retain an interest in Torino defender Gleison Bremer.

The Brazilian centre-back is a player Everton were heavily linked with during the later stages of the summer transfer window, especially after the pre-season injury to Mason Holgate forced the club to go into the market for another central defender.

In the end of course the Toffees signed Norwich City’s versatile young defender Ben Godfrey instead and the stories about Bremer died away.

Now the rumour has started up again with fresh stories of the Blues retaining a continuing interest in the Torino player.

However, with Holgate and Jarrad Branthwaite both back after injury to join Godfrey, Micheal Keane and Yerry Mina, the Toffees are not now short of central defenders.

Carlo Ancelotti hasn’t managed yet to find the right combination of these defenders, hopefully he will be able to get that balance right very soon.

I don’t think there’s anything in this story and indeed Everton have other transfer priorities when the January window opens.

One of those priorities now might be right-back with the news that Seamus Coleman is once again injured and likely to miss further games when the Premier League resumes next week.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

Coleman has been struggling to regain fitness ever since he first picked up this latest problem.

Now after breaking down again in training ahead of Ireland’s game against England on Thursday, he is a doubt for next weekend’s clash against Fulham when the Premier League returns.

Long-term, the Blues have to think about who is going to replace Coleman in the next few seasons but perhaps they will need to move on this more immediately given all Coleman’s problems.

Another more important problem is the lack of forward options, which followed the decision not to bring in another striker in the last transfer window.

These problems are the most pressing for the Toffees hierarchy when it comes to making improvements in the team, not another centre-half.
