Andre Gomes and Gylfi Sigurdsson have been underwhelming.

Discarding mediocrity

Last season’s Everton midfield consisted of Andre Gomes, Tom Davies and Gylfi Sigurdsson. Their horrific form was an embodiment of the team and there was no way that Ancelotti would make do with that midfield for this season.

In came Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Rodriguez. The 29 year old former Real Madrid man occupies the right wing where he has been terrific. Allan has instantly hit the ground running and made himself an enforcer and a guardian in front of the defence. Even though Doucoure is still not fully in his groove since coming to Goodison, he has shown signs of his true talent.

However, the third midfield spot still remains debatable. Gomes has had injury related problems, poor form issues and in general, looked out of pace.

Sigurdsson too has looked awful. He has not been an inspiration going forward nor has he shown the commitment defensively. Hence, the third midfield spot remains a spot of bother for Ancelotti.

Signing Isco will definitely relieve some stress and solve a few problems that still persist in the midfield. As for Sigurdsson and Gomes, the duo can be regular players coming off the bench but can’t be regular starters with this level of game and productivity.
