Everton could look at Manchester City’s Fernandinho as an alternative to Juventus’ Sami Khedira.

The links to Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira have picked a lot of momentum after the German footballer expressed his wish to play in the Premier League. The 33 year old has worked with Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid and fancies a reunification if an opportunity arises.

The German has not featured for Juventus this season and the chances of him donning the black and white jersey again look dim. There is a proposition of him terminating his contract at Juve and moving elsewhere. Everton are touted as a favourable destination with Calciomercato reporting that the Toffees are taking concrete steps for a transfer.

Khedira is convinced that he will leave Juventus but before terminating the contract, he wants to sort the deal with Everton. However, there have been critics questioning the idea of a possible transfer of Khedira to Everton. The Merseysiders are looking to add experience in the spine of the team and a renowned midfielder and a Champions League winner like the 33 year old can infuse the experience needed.

However, if the Toffees are looking for a veteran midfielder, Manchester City’s Fernandinho serves up to be a better alternative to Khedira. The Brazilian’s deal runs down in summer 2021 and as per the Mirror, Fernandinho is set to leave Manchester City with no new deal being anticipated.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

Fernandinho has been a work horse for Pep Guardiola’s triumphant, multidimensional side, especially in their title winning campaigns. The holding midfielder capable of playing as a centre back has received many plaudits for his industrious nature and making the demanding Guardiola system tick from the midfield.

It is true that Fernandinho is nowhere close to his prime but that is also the case for Khedira. Both the players are on their last legs and will add quality and experience to the side rather than speed. Fernandinho’s output despite being 35, compare to Khedira being 33, has been at a higher level which almost cancels out the counter point of the German being 2 years younger.

Fernandinho also has better match level fitness than Khedira and superior match playing record. The Brazilian has played 83 games in the past two seasons (2018-19 and 2019-20) compared to Khedira’s 35 appearances in the same timeframe.

Having someone like Fernandinho with adequate Premier League experience will always be more fruitful compared to Khedira. The English Top Flight is demanding and fierce which is why players coming from other leagues often tend to struggle initially, adjusting to the pace and intensity of the Premier League.
