Everton have been linked to Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti.

Everton defence has given Carlo Ancelotti some serious headache in recent times. This has affected the team in getting favourable results. 17 goals conceded games speak volumes of Everton’s inadequacy in defence. You could put Lionel Messi in the Everton attack yet lose the game because the defence will keep on leaking goals.

The Toffees has had a fair share of bad luck when it comes to injuries and suspensions but there’s no running away from the fact that the defence has been indigent. Yes, the attack is flying and scoring brilliant goals, 19 goals in 8 games is a testimony of that but the defence has been shoddy. ‘You score four, we score five’ just doesn’t cut it at the highest level.

Mason Holgate seems to be struggling to replicate the form he had last season after his awful injury that forced him out for almost three months. Ben Godfrey’s Everton career has had a nervy start with a few ups and downs in every game he’s featured in but with the new environment and a more demanding style, we can afford to cut some slack. Michael Keane’s supreme form seems to be fading as we enter the middle phase of the campaign.

One way of solving the problem is to sign someone with better quality and experience. The Merseysiders have been linked to Torino defender Gleison Bremer recently but that talk seems have gone dormant for a while now.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

According to TEAMtalk, Everton have emerged as contenders to sign French World Cup winner Samuel Umtiti from FC Barcelona. Considering the good transfer relations with Blaugrana it is not surprising for such transfer links to emerge.

There were whispers of Umtiti in the summer too but nothing substantial. If at all there’s any meat in this report, Everton must highly refrain from signing the often-injured Frenchman.

Umtiti is one of the strongest defenders but that’s only when he’s fit. When healthy, he can put in a tremendous shift but the downside is that he is hardly fit. Right now too, he’s recovering from another knee injury.

He pushed himself and played with an injury to win the World cup with France but in the process he has taken a massive toll on his knee which has resulted in him being almost losing his Barcelona career. The Blaugrana no longer want him simply because of his injury issues.

It is true that the defence requires some sorting but signing Umtiti is clearly not the way. Perhaps, the fragile Frenchman will find it even more difficult to remain fit in the ever physical, monstrous Premier League.

A proper operation needs to be done in the defence and Ancelotti, being a master of his art is well aware of the problems he has to solve. His ideas have not completely worked out but he knows what he is doing. If there’s anyone who can turn it around and make defence more solid and reliable, it will be Ancelotti.

He can possibly do it with the weapons he has at his disposal so the arrival of Umtiti from Barcelona is not at all required.
