Gylfi Sigurdsson has been one of the most unimpressive players this season.

2. Gylfi Sigurdsson

Gylfi Sigurdsson is another player who could be exiting Everton in January. The clubs record signing has rarely started for Everton this season and had little impact on games off the bench.

Sigurdsson’s best position is playing as a classic ‘No.10’ just behind the striker. But in Ancelotti’s favoured 4-3-3 there is no natural place for the Iceland international. Even if Carlo switched to a formation that contained a No.10 then James Rodriguez would most likely play that position.

With his options limited, Sigurdsson has often had to player deeper in midfield where he has been ineffective so far this season. Fabian Delph, Andre Gomes and Tom Davies have all struggled for form and fitness this season. So, it is surprising that Sigurdsson has not taken the opportunity to become a starter alongside Allan and Doucoure.

The club also have a financial incentive to move the Icelander on in January, as he is 31 years old and on big wages at the club. A January exit for Sigurdsson would therefore free up wages for investment in new transfers as well as lowering the average age of the squad. There were rumours of a transfer to MLS side DC United during the summer but moving to another English club or returning to the Bundesliga is more likely.
