Rumours today claim that prospective PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino wants to sign his former player Dele Alli when he takes over in Paris.

Pochettino of course managed Alli when he was Tottenham boss. Now it seems he is looking to sabotage a potential deal for a player that Everton are supposed to be interested in signing.

The former England international has fallen on hard times and after several less successful seasons, he is out-of-favour at Spurs under Jose Mourinho, who has relegated him to a bit-part player in his new-look team.

Alli has only made three appearances in the Premier League during this campaign, only one of which was as a starter and has largely been confined to playing in Europe.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

The Toffees have been strongly linked with a move for the attacking midfielder as the stories and rumours build before the January transfer window opens in a week’s time.

Alli’s career has been in steady decline since he starred for England at the 2018 World Cup. During that tournament he was a key part of the team that reached the semi-finals.

The former MK Dons player possesses pace, good technical ability and had a knack for ghosting into space in the box and scoring goals.

He was expected to be a key player for both club and country for the foreseeable future. That’s not what happened and given his current situation at Tottenham a move to another club would seem the best decision for him.

Alli is a talented player and he has qualities that could in theory benefit this Everton team. The Blues have been linked repeatedly with a number of midfield options including the ex-Everton player Idrissa Gueye, currently at PSG.

I’m not sure Alli is the right option for the Blues and if these stories have any substance I think he is very unlikely to be coming north.

If Pochettino does take over at PSG, which seems increasingly probable and decides he wants to be reunited with Alli, then a move across the channel seems a more likely destination than Goodison Park.

If he does go to French football in January then he will link up with a Toffees player currently on loan there: Moise Kean.

So I think the Spurs midfielder might well be joining Kean in Paris very soon, whether that’s just at first a loan or a permanent deal.
