Reports in today’s papers claim that AC Milan are ready to make a move for long-time alleged Everton target Wilfried Zaha.

Zaha has been a subject of almost constant transfer rumours since last year when Everton were strongly linked with a move for the Crystal Palace winger.

Now these reports indicate that the Italian league leaders are keen to snap up the 28-year-old, possibly in next month’s window as they push for the Serie A title.

The Toffees interest in the Ivory Coast international was always subject to caveats. The club sent out mixed messages at the time in 2019 when media reports claimed Everton had made first one then two big money bids for him.

It seemed the Blues had made one initial bid, but after that was rejected and although there were claims Everton had bid for him again, this was dismissed by the club who stated that there was no further interest in the player.

But the stories haven’t gone away and the Toffees were linked again and again with Zaha over the course of the last transfer window.

He is a player who undoubtedly possesses real talent, pace and creative skill and he would provide another quality attacking option, something Everton could certainly have done with over the past eighteen months or so.

Last season Carlo Ancelotti was setting up his teams in a 4-4-2 and needed natural width to make that work. However, he was struggling to find anyone to adequately provide that width, especially on the right.

The Blues tried to find the players out wide with little success and although they’d spent big money on ex-Arsenal wingers Theo Walcott and Alex Iwobi (who was signed supposedly as a last-minute alliterative to Zaha) neither of them seemed to be able to settle into the team and find good form.

Eventually this summer Walcott was allowed to leave and return to Southampton on loan for the season, with a strong possibility he will stay.

Ancelotti brought in James Rodriguez and reverted to a 4-3-3 in part to solve this problem. But his injury problems have returned and the Blues boss has been forced to revise his tactics again and to try and find an alternative to his Colombian star.

Iwobi had again been in and out of the side mainly playing on the left but then when he moved across to the other side of the team as Ancelotti struggled to find that balance and he started to find his feet and has been in the best form of his Everton career.

With the unexpected emergence this past month or so of Iwobi, perhaps the Toffees have finally found the player who can deliver the pace, creativity and balance on the right wing they need as an viable alternative to Rodriguez so saving the club a small fortune in transfer fees.
