AS Roma have recognized Bernard as an alternative to Stephan El Shaarawy.

Bernard arrived from Shakhtar Donetsk on a free transfer and was regarded as a major coup by the Toffees. The Brazilian had the ability to play as a playmaker and also slot into the left wing role when required. Two years later, Bernard has not fulfilled the expectations that were set by the fans and currently remains just a squad player in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans.

The Brazilian is considered an option off the bench, making 8 appearances in the season. The summer transfer window bred uncertainty over his future as Everton were linked to a number of wingers. AS Roma were interested in bringing Bernard to Italy but a move never materialized.

The Romans are now planning to reignite their interest in Bernard as their pursuit of Stephan El Shaarawy is reaching nowhere. Giallorossi have not yet convinced Shanghai Shenhua to allow El Shaarawy to join Roma back on loan which has seen Roma explore other options. According to Calciomercato, Bernard is now a target for Paulo Fonseca.

Another report mentions that Roma are unconvinced about Carles Perez. The Spaniard may leave on loan in January which would see Roma move for Bernard to please Paulo Fonseca, a player that he wanted to sign back in the summer transfer window.

Fonseca and Bernard worked together at Shakhtar and have an amicable relationship and the Roma boss had already requested the signing of the 28 year old.

Is it time to sell Bernard?

If Everton decide to sell Bernard, whatever transfer fees they get will be considered as a profit as the Brazilian came on a free transfer. The Bernard operation has not been as successful as one would have hoped for and at the moment it would be in the best interests to sell him and reinvest the amount in bringing another winger in the summer. If Everton delay his sale till next summer, the Toffees will have to accept a lower bid as Bernard will enter the final year of his contract next summer.

On the other hand, Everton starlet Anthony Gordon has found difficulties in getting game time mainly due to the competition in his position. If Bernard is sold, Gordon could get a much more extended run in the team.

The former Shakhtar man has a market value of around £13.5 million (Transfrmarkt). So, if Everton can get around £15 million for the Brazilian, it would be business well done.
