After the cancellation of their latest Premier League match against Aston Villa, Everton return to FA Cup action on Sunday as they take on Sheffield Wednesday.

As we’ve mentioned before, this game is a repeat of the final of 1966 when Everton eventually beat Wednesday 3-2 after falling two goals behind in what is still the second biggest comeback win in modern FA Cup final history.

The Toffees need to take the Cup seriously this season as it’s obviously the only trophy they can realistically win. Yes we’d all like to dream of a Leicester City-type title triumph but to be honest I think that’s very unlikely to happen.

The Blues have a fine tradition in the oldest cup competition in the world having claimed it five times overall and it’s the last piece of silverware they won way back in 1995.

Carlo Ancelotti has spoken of how much he values the FA Cup and he has fond memories of it having claimed the famous ‘double’ of league and Cup in 2009-10 with Chelsea.

So given all that he will pick a really strong team to face Wednesday. And as the players didn’t have a game last week they should all be fresh and ready to go again.

On the team news front, Ancelotti confirmed that Lucas Digne and Alex Iwobi will both miss the clash at Goodison Park on Sunday.

That’s a blow as both were good against Wolves (especially Iwobi) and while Digne has only just come back from his injury, the Nigerian has been excellent filling in on the right in James Rodriguez’ absence.

Talking of the Colombian ace, Ancelotti confirmed he is fully fit again and so he will presumably come in on the right as usual.

Without Digne the Toffees boss has a very solid alternative at left-back with Ben Godfrey. He can also bring Seamus Coleman in on the opposite flank but I’d probably continue with Mason Holgate there, at least to start with and stick to a defence that has only conceded one goal from open play since it came together.

The other big piece of news on the team selection front is that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is fit again after his recent knock and can resume his role leading the Blues attack.

With Allan still out the only other selection questions are who will start in central midfield. Ancelotti doesn’t have many options if he plays a 4-3-3 but the obvious players would be the two who started at Wolves; Tom Davies and Gylfi Sigurdsson alongside Abodulaye Doucoure.

One other option would be to move Hogate into midfield in place of Davies probably, to provide additional defensive cover and support.

dark. Next. Everton are to miss out on midfield talent

At any rate, however they set up to play, Everton need a decent performance and most of all of course a win to keep their hopes of silverware alive this season.
