Cenk Tosun’s Everton future has been the subject of much speculation over the past year or so as he’s struggled for playing time and now it seems as though three European clubs are possibly competing to take the Turkish striker away from Goodison Park.

The one club that have been most strongly linked to Tosun is the same one Everton signed him from back in January 2018: Besiktas. But now several others are also apparently in the mix.

When Sam Allardyce bought the Turkish international during his unloved stint as Blues boss, it was hoped he might prove to be capable of making the step up and scoring goals consistently in English football.

It’s turned out not to be the case and Tosun has struggled to ever find a place in the Toffees team or to show he can lead the line and score goals in the Premier League. He lacks the pace and movement required although he is strong in the air and is a decent finisher.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

To be fair to him he was brought in to play in a direct style under Allardyce where he would be operating as a target man alongside wingers with genuine pace. Since the current West Brom boss departed Goodison Park he’s not really played in that kind of team or formation.

Although recently he’s had a few chances under Carlo Ancelotti, it doesn’t look as though he has a part to play in the Italian’s plans going forward.

So when this January transfer window opened there was further talk about his future and whether he would move on at last.

Now as the window counts down towards its conclusion, along with Besiktas and CSKA Moscow, Celta Vigo and several other European outfits are also all supposedly keeping tabs on the striker. We just need West Ham to be added to the mix and then you’ve got a proper transfer rumour!

Seriously though if Tosun has the chance to move on for regular football before the end of the month, that would make sense for him with the European Championships presumably still taking place in six months time.

For Everton getting his wages off the books would be a very welcome thing. But if he did leave this January then the Blues would be very short of striking options unless they get someone new in. This is an issue we’ve discussed many times before.

dark. Next. Important match and points for Everton

Without Tosun, Dominic Calvert-Lewin would now be the only senior striker in the first-team squad. It looks as though Joshua Zirkzee a player rumoured to be of interest to the Blues, is going to Parma instead so Everton are in danger of going into the second half of the season without any backup to the England forward.
