Carlo Ancelotti has hinted that he may request Everton sign a replacement for Cenk Tosun should the Turkish striker leave in this transfer window.

It looks increasingly likely that Tosun will go out on loan before the window shuts in a few days time and leave Everton, with his previous club Besiktas the strong favourites to re-sign him.

Others are also apparently interested and it does seem that the Toffees are very keen for Tosun to get a move away from Goodison Park before the deadline.

That would leave the Blues with only one orthodox striker in Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison who can also move inside and fill in there.

That doesn’t seem adequate cover and so the Everton boss has indicated he would request that the club bring someone else in.

This does of course contradict what both he and Marcel Brands said earlier this month that there would be no additions, but Tosun leaving together with Ellis Simms having gone on loan obviously seems to have changed things.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

Certainly the Toffees are leaving all this late with less than 72 hours to go before the window shuts. Tosun is still not certain to go and there seem to be precious few options available if the Blues do decide to add to their squad.

One striker heavily linked with Everton is Joshua Zirkzee but it seems as though he prefers a move to Parma in Serie A and so it looks like the Toffees have lost out on him.

Ancelotti also gave a pre-match update on player injuries confirming that Allan although still absent for this afternoon’s match against Newcastle, is ready to return to training next week.

In addition, the manager also said that Jean-Philippe Gbamin might be back with the first-team squad next week as he continues his seemingly endless rehabilation from the latest injury setback he suffered last May.

Given his eighteen month absence from the team few Evertonians even those lucky enough to have seen the former Mainz player in a royal blues shirt, will remember much about him!

However, it’s good news that he seems at last to be on the final stretch of his return to fitness. Who knows if all goes well supporters might even get to see him back in the side before the end of this campaign!

It would have been good to have him available recently with Allan’s injury keeping him out and leaving a big hole in central midfield.

But now if he can recover to something like the player we thought the club had signed back in summer 2019, then it will give Ancelotti a welcome boost for the second half of the season and another option both in midfield and at centre-half too.
