Dominic Calvert-Lewin started the season with a bang, posting numbers second to none and at one point was by far the best striker in England. Then came a barren spell where he went goalless for six games and was not able to offer much in front of the goal. Calvert-Lewin returned to the goalscoring charts and has now scored three goals in three games including a breathtaking injury time equalizer against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
In the previous game, DCL was taken off in the 55th minute after he felt something in his hamstring which has now ruled him out of the Fulham game. The absence of Everton’s prime striker can prove to be fatal but thankfully, the club now has enough depth to cover for DCL and also provide intriguing alternatives to the plan.
The Toffees signed Joshua King in the eleventh hour of the winter transfer window deadline day, to reinforce the attack department after the departures of Cenk Tosun and Anthony Gordon on loan. King was convinced to make the switch to Everton after Carlo Ancelotti personally convinced the 29 year old that he is a firm part of plans at Goodison Park.
Joshua King could be set for his first Everton start
The Norwegian made his Everton debut against Leeds United coming on in the culminating stages of the game. The forward then had a nine minute cameo against Manchester United. However, he’s yet to make his first start in the royal blue shirt. That opportunity could arrive against Fulham with DCL ruled out.
King’s capabilities give Ancelotti plenty of options to tinker with. He can be deployed as a striker, a secondary striker or on the wings. King has always been a formidable forward, racking up impressive numbers. In 184 games as a Bournemouth player, the Norwegian has scored 53 goals and provided 19 assists. The Manchester United academy product is on a short loan at Goodison Park but intends to stay for a longer time.
"This squad and club are reaching and climbing and building something. I am eager to prove myself and to try to give the boss a reason to pick me. I feel ready and this week of training will do me good. I am focusing on working hard and trying to reach my top form as quickly as possible. Then we will see what happens in the summer. I am loving it and, of course, would love to stay but it has to be right for the Club and for me. (via Everton official website)"
Today could be his big audition day. If he is able to minimize the absence of a colossal figure like Calvert-Lewin, King would not only quickly win the support the Everton faithful but also send a message to the club to consider him as a long term option.
