Everton have been linked to Lucas Vazquez recently as the Spaniard comes to the end of his cycle at Real Madrid. Los Blancos have failed to reach an agreement with Vazquez as they now stare at losing him for a free in the summer.

The Spaniard rejected the ultimate renewal offer from Real Madrid as the new deal was not fulfilling his expectations. Los Merengues offered Vazquez a three year extension with a wage cut of 10% keeping in mind the financial consequences of the pandemic and avoiding a big hole in the treasury chests in the upcoming seasons.

The 29 year old instead wanted a pay raise for his loyalty and services to the club which Real Madrid simply cannot offer. With no party ready to let their guard down, Vazquez is set to become a free agent in the summer.

For a versatile player of Vazquez’s calibre, there will always be takers for him especially if he’s available for a dime a dozen. Everton, AC Milan, Napoli, Leeds United have all been linked to the Real Madrid winger. However, Vazquez seems to prefer a move to England which could be a boost to English teams chasing him.

According to the Mirror, Vazquez has instructed his entourage to find him a club in the Premier League as the player aims to sort his future before the end of the season. However, the report further adds that Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have been approached and let them know about Vazquez’s availability.

Everton have some serious surgery to do on the right side as they have been left vulnerable in a lot of games in that area. In Vazquez, the Toffees can get a jack of all trades for the right side, capable of playing on the wing as well as a right back.

Vazquez has played the majority of this season in the right back position, covering for injured Dani Carvajal. When you expect a makeshift right back to suffer, Vazquez has excleed and posted some eye-catching numbers. 3.19 tackles per 90 minutes, 6.07 pressures per 90 minutes and a tackle success rate of 70%.

Alongside his versatility, his crossing is his greatest strength, attempting 3.87 crosses per 90 minutes. Vazquez also has 45 passes in the penalty area and 18 crosses in the penalty area, making him a sizeable threat from the flanks. (stats via FBref)

Everton could lay their hands on a malleable and quality laden player for free but the clock is ticking as more and more clubs come into the equation. There is no running away from the fact that Carlo Ancelotti needs to pay attention to Everton’s right side and if Vazquez is signed, Everton may have some relief but a stumbling block will be Vazquez’s desire to play in the Champions League.

Everton’s recent losses to Burnley and Chelsea have derailed them to a certain extent in the top four race but what could work in Everton’s favour is that the other English clubs linked are also not in a position to offer Champions League football next season as Spurs and Arsenal sit 8th and 10th respectively.
