1. In a midfield diamond

Ancelotti has tinkered with the shape and style of the Everton team and used several formations to get the best out of the available players. A midfield diamond with two strikers upfront has yielded satisfactory returns for the Toffees.

Allan sits at the base of the midfield diamond with Gylfi Sigurdsson up top. Doucoure and Gomes would feature as the other central midfielders. However, the loss of Doucoure means Everton are deprived of the combative skills along with his energy, two very important attributes required to make the midfield diamond function.

Though the supporters haven’t seen a lot from Jean-Philippe Gbamin, 135 minutes in an Everton shirt to be precise, the Ivorian is athletic and offers energy in the middle of the park. He has bags of energy as he showcased during his Mainz 05 days.

He will just be like a new signing and will be an ideal midfield player to partner with the likes of Allan and Gomes. Gbamin can in fact even play at the base of the diamond, acting as the guardian of the rearguard and allowing Allan to drive forward from time to time.

Gbamin is right-footed and can directly fit in Doucoure’s place in the diamond. The Ivorian was bought from Mainz as a direct replacement to Idrissa Gana Gueye who left for PSG. When Doucoure is eventually fit, Gbamin can become the shield for the back four or five who will be supported by Allan and the Frenchman.
