While the previous summer transfer window focused on transfers to strengthen the side and uplift the quality of the team, Marcel Brands was also aware of the massive squad clearout required. The likes of Yannick Bolasie, Muhamed Besic, Sandro Ramirez, Theo Walcott and some other players were deemed as surplus to requirements.

The mass exodus had already begun as the likes of Oumar Niasse, Cuco Martina and Luke Garbutt were already released. Walcott was in the final year of his contract and Goodison Park but the Toffees wanted to get rid of the £100,000 per week they were paying to former Arsenal man. Eventually, Walcott joined Southampton on loan and now is likely to join them permanently on a free transfer.

Ramirez moved to SD Huesca on a free transfer but Bolasie and Besic failed to sort their futures elsewhere. In the January transfer window, Everton further trimmed their squad and lightened their wage budget as Jonas Lossl joined Midtjylland whereas Jonjoe Kenny, Cenk Tosun and Bolasie left on loan. Besic once again failed to seal an exit despite some clubs showing an interest.

The Bosnian has final few months left on his Everton deal and will become a free agent after the end of this season.  Besic continues to search for a new club and it appears that there has been some interest from a Championship side.

Reading interested in forgotten Everton man Muhamed Besic

According to Telegraph, Everton midfielder Besic is wanted by Championship side Reading. Veljko Paunovic’s side were keen to sign the Bosnian in January but a deal couldn’t be completed before the end of the winter transfer window. Besic is still a target for the Royals and this summer they could acquire him on a free transfer.

Not being able to command any transfer fee, the Toffees will incur a loss of over £4 million which they paid to Ferencvaros in 2014. However, the total investment in this deal will shot higher when taken into account the wages paid to the 28 year old since 2014.

Besic was loaned out to Middlesbrough and Sheffield United as he failed to make a mark at Everton. He last donned the royal blue jersey in 2017 and since then has not featured for the Merseyside team.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina international was considered as an exciting talent after his radiant performances in the 2014 FIFA World Cup but sadly Besic failed to capitalize on the momentum and has struggled in England ever since. He became persona non grata after Roberto Martinez was sacked and then slowly was completely forgotten.

A move to Reading could help Besic turn the tide and bring his career back on track. Whether he joins Reading or some other club remains to be seen but there is a surety that he will leave Goodison Park at the end of the season.
