Reports today claim that long-time Everton target Max Aarons apparently ‘fancies’ a move to Goodison Park this summer.

That will be of some interest I assume to the Everton brass as they consider a move for the Norwich City star.

Aarons has been on the radar of Marcel Brands and presumably Carlo Ancelotti as they look at their options to strengthen the right side of the team this summer.

This upcoming window is going to be another huge one, but we’ve said that before as well. Last summer the Toffees brought in four excellent players, (Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure, James Rodriguez and Ben Godfrey), all of whom have markedly improved the team.

However, overall the teams results have ultimately once again been inconsistent and erratic and if the Blues fail to qualify for Europe and finish eighth or ninth, which I think is likely, then how much genuine progress has been made?

In fact if that is where Everton finish at the end of the season, it will effectively be exactly the same position as in Marco Silva’s last full campaign in charge.

So while there has certainly been improvement in performances particularly away from home, too often the Toffees have continued to flatter to deceive and have badly underperformed in home matches. This has led to to some defeats that will probably be ultimately decisive in shaping the season’s outcome.

The young 21-year-old Aarons is a player of undoubted talent with the skills and qualities that the Blues need to shore up that side of the team and would give a real boost to Everton next season.

Having said that the England Under-21 player isn’t a great attacking player and isn’t likely to contribute a great deal to improving the creativity and goals of the team, something  which is critical.

And the fee being quoted of around £30 million is far too steep in my opinion. Spending that amount on him would mean there is far less available for other targets, particularly in attack.

If I’m honest I think Everton need to consider finding a player who can offer more all-round contribution, if they are able to do so.

That might be a player like Domenico Berardi who I would reeally like to see at Goodison Park next season as he can offer tremendous attacking skill and would be solid enough defensively.

Whoever Everton are considering trying to bring in this summer they must get this right and find the player/players who can help to reinvigorate the team in this position. If they can’t manage that in this window then you have to start thinking will this club ever make the improvement necessary to get into Europe and win trophies again?
