Bissouma might be what Everton need

Thinking back to recent matches and one player who shone in Brighton’s recent 0-0 draw with Everton was Yves Bissouma. He could be the type of midfielder the Toffees need to look at again.

I say this because once again having only just returned from his endless injury problems, Everton midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin was hurt in training and will miss the rest of the season.

Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti has apparently ruled out bringing anyone else in to play that central midfield defensive role that Gbamin was bought to fill back in summer 2019.

That may be born of real confidence that his Ivory Coast player can quickly overcome this latest ridiculously frustrating setback.

But there is always going to be a nagging doubt given his track record, as to whether he will ever be fit and strong enough to deliver what he promised when Marco Silva signed him to replace Idrissa Gueye.

I don’t want to give up on Gbamin and at least his latest problem didn’t require surgery. So he could well be ready to resume that long-delayed Everton career in a few weeks time.

If Gbamin hadn’t suffered another setback and had been able to finish this season and show signs of what we had missed, then I would have been content for the Toffes to concentrate on other areas of the team that need strengthening in this transfer window.

But this isn’t going to be the case now and so I think Ancelotti should be open to the possibility of bringing another similar type of player in.

Bissouma is a very similar player to Gbamin, he’s a deep-lying central midfielder who is very strong and athletic and gets around the pitch really well with lots of energy and commitment.

He was the best player on the pitch at the Amex Stadium during that drab 0-0 draw, although that wasn’t hard to manage!

Everton do need more energy and bite in midfield and while Abdoulaye Doucoure and Allan have been excellent, there is need for another player to provide further reinforcement of these two as Tom Davies, while a tidy enough water-carrier, hasn’t got that pace, dynamism and drive.

There’s a further reason for this consideration and that is Allan’s own injury worries. The Brazilian has missed chunks of the season hurt and given his age and the wear and tear he’s had in his career with his abrasive style, it’s likely he will have more time out in the next few campaigns.

I also think he would be better suited to playing a more advanced role as he certainly has the ability to use the ball very effectively, something the Toffees haven’t been able to take advantage of this season.

Gbamin sitting deeper in that number six position where Allan has often operated, would have been perfect to come in and allow him and Doucoure to get more involved in the attacking third. Bissouma could also do that job too.

The Brighton man might also be available for a more affordable price at around £15 million than some of the other possibilities who have been touted recently like Adrien Rabiot.

Anyway, it’s surely food for thought for the Everton manager because if a chance to sign the Mali international came and went and Gbamin then broke down again, it would take us back to the same problems that have hampered the Blues midfield this season.
