Max Aarons’ future is still a topic of wide discussion in the media with stories emerging today that he is now also wanted by another rival to Everton.

That club is Arsenal now alledgely keeping tabs in the young Norwich defender who has been relentlessly linked with a move to Everton over the past few weeks and months.

The Gunners. beaten by the Blues last Friday night are another team looking for a new right-back with current incumbant Hector Bellerin looking likely to leave in the summer.

On the face of it Arsenal might struggle to persude Aarons to join them as they have had a very ordinary season bumping along in mid-table for most of the season.

But there are two factors that might give them an edge. One is being a London club as there have been rumours Aarons wants to stay in the south of England. I don’t know if there is anything to this but it might be a consideration to him.

The other factor is can they offer European football, most particualrly Champions League football. Arsenal face Villareal tonight in the first leg of their Europe League semi-final and should they overcome the Spanish side and then win the final, a big if but possible, then they’d have a place in the elite competition next season to offer.

This situation underlines how important it is for the Toffees to secure European football next season. Arsenal have been dead average for much of the season even at one point looking like they might be in a relegation battle, especially when they were beaten by Everton at Goodison Park back in December.

But in a weak Europa League competition they’ve been much better as sometimes happens when a team finds a sort of release from the pressure and grind of league football.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

Were Arsenal to win that tournament and be able to offer Aarons Champions League football, it would give the Gunners a major advantage in any summer transfer battle for his signature.

In more related transfer news another defender previously mentioned in relation to Everton is again being linked with the club.

That player is Merih Demiral the Juventus and Turkey international central defender. According to our ever active Italian source, Carlo Ancelotti wants the player to come to Goodison Park and will make a move for him this summer.

Although Demiral is a good, solid defender I don’t see the need for Everton to sign another centre-back this summer, there are other more pressing priorities further up the pitch. But the rumours around new central defenders don’t go away so maybe there’s something in it.

Pehaps the idea is he might be part of a possible swap deal with Moise Kean returning to his old club again. Unlikely I think but we shall see.
