Everton might be moving to sign a defender called Carragher as the club are linked with former Reds legend Jamie’s son who is currently at Wigan Athletic.

The Daily Telegraph via the Echo claim that Everton are in talks to sign James, the 18-year-old son of Jamie, who spent his career across Stanley Park at Anfield.

Carragher senior as many will know was an Evertonian as a youngster and used to regularly attend matches at Goodison Park at the time of the club’s mid-eighties heyday.

But he ended up at Liverpool pulling on a red shirt and spending his entire career at Anfield winning the FA Cup and Champions League.

He was one of a host of Blues supporting youngsters who went on to play for our neighbours in the nineties and early 2000’s such as Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Micheal Owen.

Wigan are a club whose young players have been regularly connected to the Toffees and the Blues have been recently linked with a young forward Joe Gelhardt from the Lancashire club recently.

Now this latest story is claiming that Everton want to bring James Carragher to Goodison Park this summer as they seek to strengthen defensively.

The defender has been impressive this season and can apparently leave this summer without a big fee being involved, hence Everton’s alledged interest. His age and profile is typical of the kind of player Marcel Brands tends to be interested in.

It would make for a nice circular outcome if the player ended up in a royal blue shirt. This is though a rumour that I don’t think makes a lot of sense. The Blues already have six central defenders on their books including two young players; Jarrad Branthwaite and Lewis Gibson.

Both Branthwaite and Gibson are on loan at the moment although Branthwaite is now injured and will not play for Blackburn again this season.

Rumours about new centre-backs have been a constant feature of recent months with the Toffees persistently linked with new central defenders especially Khalidou Khoulibaly at Napoli.

As I’ve previously said I’m not sure buying another centre-back should be a major priority in this summer transfer window.

However, recent performances particularly the wobbly form of Mason Holgate has raised renewed questions about the strength in depth of the teams defensive resources.

And a young defender signed last summer, Ben Godfrey, has proved to be a great buy and has cemented a place in the team.

Still, the real focus needs to be other areas of the team where the Blues need much more width, pace and goals and to strengthen the right side of the team and an often weak and anemic attack and improve the power and energy in midfield.
