I almost don’t believe it but Everton have managed to lose yet again at home as this team has just gone down to a truly calamitous 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United tonight.

Is this some kind of weird parallel universe we’re living in where Everton are prevented by forces beyond anyone’s control from winning a match at Goodison Park?

Or is the truth that this is just another over-hyped and average Toffees side, the kind of team us long-suffering supporters have seen so often and for so long. I think we know the answer.

Tonight’s failure to pick up three points has ended the Blues tenuous hopes of securing European football next season. With Tottenham and Liverpool winning this weekend it’s basically all over.

To be honest I thought Europe was a long shot for a while and although this is a dire defeat, it’s the culmination of a series of awful home defeats.

Where to begin with this appalingly disappointing football team’s latest failure to win at the Grand Old Lady, which it now seems is becoming a real psychological problem.

To be honest Everton didn’t ever really look like they believed they could win this match and they were really tentative and lacking in self-belief. Despite again creating a number of half-chances there was little conviction in their play and just like at Villa some dreadfully poor finishing.

And as I suspected the Toffees opponents, free from any pressure and with nothing to play for, produced a very solid performance, one of their best, during what has for the Blades been a truly forgettable campaign.

Talking of forgettable seasons this is going to be yet another one for Evertonians too as this latest campaign staggers to it’s inevitably underwhelming and mediocre conclusion.

Well I guess we should just cover what actually happened this evening. Sheffield United scored in the first ten minutes and then defended that lead successfully with keeper Aaron Ramsdale making some superb saves and the home team wasting the decent chances they did have.

That is bascially it and just like in so many other Premier League games at Goodison Park this season the Blues simply couldn’t find a decent, determined and quality performance against a team that has struggled all season long and has just been relegated.

Once again Everton’s opponents outworked them and were much better able to press and force mistakes while also defending strongly. The formula is so predictably familiar now.

Anyway, I think that’s all I want to say at the moment about this latest inept home display from those players wearing royal blues shirts.
