Another Khalidou Koulibaly story today as Everton are again being linked with a summer move for the Napoli centre-back.

This rumour has kept surfacing in recent weeks and months and this time it’s being claimed that Everton will seek to sell Mason Holgate in order to fund a deal for the 29-year-old.

Just yesterday I wrote that I thought another experienced centre-back Samuel Umtiti who might also be available as Barcelona look to do a clearout when the transfer window opens, could offer the Toffees.

Now we’re hearing with this story that the Blues are ready to sell one of their existing defenders to fund a move for the Napoli player. That player is Mason Holgate.

The Toffees defender has had a tough season and in recent matches he has struggled to perform adequately with him having a particular nightmare in the home game against Aston Villa.

Holgate has found it difficult to kick on and this is partly perhaps because of all the injuries and almost constant chopping and changing of players at the back.

This won’t help a player to settle and find his best form but even so the level of almost schoolboy type errors that Holgate continues to make is worrying.

As I’ve said it does appear increasingly likely that Carlo Ancelotti might be ready to make a move for another centre-back and this story keeps popping up.

Another dimension to this is the injuries to other defenders in particular Yerry Mina. The Colombian is again out hurt and he has had another interrupted campaign with several spells out of the side again.

If he could stay fit Mina would be a very good centre-back but these constant problems raise questions abut whether Ancelotti can ever rely on his fitness and build his defence around him.

So we’ll see if indeed the Everton manager does look to move one or other of his existing central defenders on to fund a move for Koulibaly or anyone else.
