Here we go again then and another Premier League match tomorrow night as Everton take on Wolves in what has now become a basically meaningless game.

While technically still possible, Everton have effectively blown their chances of European football and only a minor miracle would make that still possible. And this club doesn’t deal in miracles unless it’s the ability to find new ways to lose games and make their supporters ever more angry and despairing.

That was the case again on Sunday as that pathetic group of players managed to lose 1-0 to Sheffield United in the latest Goodison Park debacle this season.

If I’m honest I just want this season to end now rather than carry on with these two essentially meaningless matches.

But anyway I guess we have to go through the final motions to complete another season in which the Toffees finish without a trophy or indeed anything to show for all those games, yet again.

So the Blues welcome Wolves to the Grand Old Lady with a scattering of fans now finally allowed back into the ground. I don’t know what sort of mood those few supporters who are there tomorrow night will be feeling but if it was me I wouldn’t be in the most charitable mood.

Everton defeated the Midlanders when the two sides met at Molineux earlier in the season in one of those solid away day victories that have been achieved this season. Those were headier times when qualifying for the Champions League not just Europe seemed possible.

Wolves have had an unexpectedly difficult campaign not at all like last season when they had been excellent and were very close to securing Champions League football with a few games left.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

This time round they’ve struggled conceding lots of goals and along with many other teams have been hampered by injuries to key players. They also let Diogo Jota leave for Liverpool last summer and they have missed his goals.

Carlo Ancelotti has revealed the Toffees have Yerry Mina and Josh King back – although if past games are anything to go by Ancelotti is unlikely to play him anyway – and so now only the ever-injured Jean-Philippe Gbamin is unavailable.

The Blues boss says it’s good to have virtually all his players back but it doesn’t do much good if they don’t turn up and none of them perform on the night! Frankly if it was me I’d be tempted just to play the kids and let them have a go. Can it be any worse?

I have no idea how the players who are picked will perform, but given the perverse nature of things they will probably go and win this match especially as Wolves have nothing to play for.
