It looks as though Everton will lose out in the race for Lille midfield dynamo Boubakary Soumare as Leicester City look to be favourites for his signature.

Soumare is a player recently linked to a number of clubs after his standout season in the French top flight this season. Everton were supposedly one of them.

Well according to a French journalist, the Foxes are closing in on signing the midfielder after being the frontrunner for a while now.

Soumare has the qualities that the Toffees need to further strengthen their midfield and could have made a perfect alternative to the once again injured Jean-Philippe Gbamin. Adding him to Wilfried Ndidi and Youri Tielemans will further boost Leicester’s excellent midfield.

If the Frenchman does end up at the Midlands club this summer, the Blues will have to look elsewhere, assuming they were even monitoring the player to begin with.

Given Gbmain’s problems, Everton have been linked with a new central midfielder for a while now and several names have been mooted most often Juventus enforcer Adrien Rabiot.

I don’t know how much of a priority bringing in another defensive midfielder is, as the noises coming out of the club indicate that Carlo Ancelotti has said he sees Gbamin as an adequate option there and is focussing on the attacking third instead.

In that respect there is a story in today’s press that the Toffees are possibly interested in Blackburn striker Adam Armstrong. The young forward is attracting attention from several Premier League clubs (or ex-Premier League in Fulham’s case).

The Blues are one of the clubs supposedly also tracking the 24-year-old who has netted 24 times in this past Championship season. However, his price tag of around £25 million is excessive.

Returning to midfield, Gbamin’s latest injury which ruled him out for the rest of the season only a few days after he had finally returned to the team against Crystal Palace, does raise major concerns again about the long-term viability of continuing to persevere with him.

With the season approaching it’s end we will see very soon whether the club are going to look for another central midfielder to provide additional options and competition.
