According to fresh reports today Everton are still interested in signing the Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

Everton of course tried to bring the Argentine stopper in on deadline day last summer as they sought additional competition for Jordan Pickford but were frustrated by United’s apparent unwillingness to let him join another Premier League club competing directly with them.

Well as we know the Toffees switched attention to other targets and signed Sweden international Robin Olsen from Roma on loan instead.

Olsen has been solid enough when he has played and his presence does seem to have pushed Pickford to significantly improve his concentration and consistency.

In fact the England keeper has been arguably the Blues best player since the beginning of the calendar year. His recent performances in particular have been pretty much faultless and have been vital in securing points for his team.

This is a welcome change to how things used to be when Pickford’s erratic and occasionally clown-like performances between the sticks had cost Everton dearly.

As for the Swede it seemed as though he was ready to commit to staying longer than his season-long loan before a horrific home invasion incident caused him to reconsider.

And according to this story in the Daily Mail, Olsen has decided to return to Roma this summer and so the Toffees will renew their previous interest in Romero.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

The Argentine is known to be very unhappy with his situation at United and the lack of game time he’s had and that frustration even led to his wife taking to social media last year to slam the Old Trafford club for refusing to sanction her husband’s move to Goodison Park!

If Olsen does leave at the end of his loan, the Blues will need to find another keeper to maintain that pressure on Pickford, which has proved so effective this season.

They could look to young Joao Virginia who was excellent when he came in for Pickford and Olsen earlier this season at a time when both were injured. But his youth and lack of experience might lead the club to think another loan next season would be best.

I’m not actually sure that’s true as his last loan outing to Reading wasn’t a success and I feel he’d perhaps be better off staying and fighting for a chance to play.

Romero would be an excellent number two and would offer exactly what Olsen has provided; quality and experience to push the ex-Sunderland player.
