Everton have an interesting goalkeeper conundrum looming. Jordan Pickford has been the undoubted No.1 with occasional outings for Robin Olsen who arrived on loan from AS Roma at the start of the season. With no indications of a permanent deal, the Swede is on course to return to the Italian capital once his loan spell ends, leaving Everton linked with a list of keepers like Sergio Romero, Wojciech Szczesny and others.

There were whispers of a permanent deal in January but things have changed since then. Olsen and his family were attacked by a machete gang and were a victim of a house burglary. Several reports have indicated that the 31 year old will return to Roma and not extend his stay in Merseyside.

More from Prince Rupert's Tower

The Toffees have been linked to several keepers in the past few weeks. Manchester United outcast Romero is one of the familiar names making headlines. The Argentine keeper was a target last season too before the Royal Blues eventually moved to sign Olsen on the summer transfer deadline day.

Manchester United shot-stopper is eyeing a move away from Old Trafford as his contract comes to an end this summer. A number of clubs are eyeing the 34 year old with Everton also in the mix.

Everton in the hunt for Sergio Romero

According to Calciomercato, Everton want to sign Romero as a replacement to Olsen who will return to Roma. The Toffees are searching for a backup to Pickford and view Romero as a suitable candidate.

The Red Devils didn’t sanction a deal last summer but the former Sampdoria man will be free to leave this summer as his deal runs out with the club. Despite being 34, interest in him is high with Everton and Juventus eyeing Romero. The Old Lady are bidding farewell to club legend Gianluigi Buffon and want a deputy keeper for Szczesny.

Is Sergio Romero the right choice for Everton?

Romero has slipped down the pecking order at Old Trafford after Dean Henderson’s return from loan last summer. David de Gea has become the second choice keeper whereas Romero has been completely exiled from the lineup.

A departure is certain for the 34 year old but should Everton be circling around Romero? At 34, he doesn’t offer a long term solution to the goalkeeper conundrum. Pickford remains the undisputed No.1 but as seen from the past, Ancelotti doesn’t shy away from rotating his keepers from time to time.

Romero hasn’t played a single game in over a year, raising doubts over his match fitness. However, he comes with loads of experience in his gloves which will be extremely helpful for youngster Joao Virginia.

The Toffees will not expect Romero to feature regularly but just do enough to prevent Pickford from being complacent. Virginia looks promising but needs the right incubation and counsel. Till the time he blossoms into a solid keeper capable of challenging Pickford, Romero could be a workable solution. It’s certainly a low risk option considering he can arrive on a free transfer and can provide backup for the Englishman.
