Everton appear to have lost out on Galtier

Well it looks as though the options for who Everton can bring in to take over as manager are rapidly tightening with stories that one of the potential options is talking to another club.

That man is Christophe Galtier the Lille coach who has apparently been on the Everton board’s radar as they try and find the successor to Carlo Ancelotti.

Galtier is coming off a great season with Lille as he won the French title pipping Ligue 1 giants PSG on the final day of the season.

He is an interesting option for the Toffees and I think he ticks a lot of the boxes that the Blues should be looking at.

He is a coach who builds teams that are solid defensively and yet can also create and score goals aplenty too. He seems to have a clear way of playing and also integrates young players into his teams well something I don’t think recent Everton managers have done.

The Frenchman it seems is willing to move on and perhaps look for a new project and so he has been mooted for the Toffees job.

But although his name may have been discussed in the corridors of Goodison Park he doesn’t seem to be a serious candidate and I think the reason is his lack of Premier League experience, although he did have a spell as an assistant coach at Portsmouth.

That’s a key reason why managers like Nuno Espirito Santo and Rafa Benitez are the main candidates for the job as Farhad Moshiri seems particularly keen to ensure.

Now it looks like Galtier might well be staying in France and moving to Nice instead of coming to England and Everton.

All this is further evidence of the lack of coherent thinking about how the club are going to find a replacement for Ancelotti.

I said at the start of this process that Everton had to define an identity and a way they wanted to play and build an effective and competitive team and one that was playing a coherent established way that didn’t necessarily depend on who was the first team manager.

The arrival of Marcel Brands was supposed to be part of creating that culture and football identity. That hasn’t happened and his role in the hire of a new manager is very unclear.

And it seems to me that this lack of coherence and a clear philosophy of football is going to mean whoever wins this increasingly bizarre race for the manager’s job, won’t last long and so in a few years time the club will be back to square one again.
