Everton need to make a decision and get this done

Eddie Howe is back under consideration according to new reports as Everton veer this way and that in the protracted and apparently endless search for a new manager.

First it was Nuno and then it was Rafa and now who knows, least of all it seems the board at Everton as we wait and wait for a decision to be made.

The backlash against Benitez was predictably very strong and while it’s hard to measure whether that response represents the vast majority of Blues supporters or just the most vocal, it’s true to say that his appointment would be a massive gamble by the club and would be very unpopular with many Evertonians.

So it looks like it’s back to square one again and past names who pooped up in recent weeks are back on the table and one of them is Eddie Howe.

The ex-Bournemouth manager is not one of those candidates that we’ve talked about much. He had a spell in the Premier League with the Cherries and kept them up for a good few seasons before gravity eventually seemed to take hold and they went down.

In that time his Bournemouth teams played some exciting attacking football but weren’t always the best defensively, to put it mildly.

This is the big minus with him and there is that feeling that he would be a Martinez-type coach who would end up costing Everton too many points through some overly adventurous football without a solid enough defensive base.

And this is the conundrum the Toffees face. Fans want to see exciting football and that’s totally understandable but you still have to have a strong defence especially when you are re-building a team, which this club is yet again having to do.

Other names kept getting thrown into the mix and it just seems a totally random set of contradictory types of coach.

One of those is Graham Potter. The Brighton manager has done a fine job on the south coast and he’s got the Seagulls playing some excellent attacking football without having the talent up front to make it count. He would I think bring a defined style of play and he’s also good at bringing through and developing young talent like Yves Bissouma.

In some ways I think it’s just getting to the point that we simply need someone in charge with pre-season looking and the transfer market hotting up. Are they waiting for the Euros to finish to try and get one of those coaches in? Time is beginning to tick on seriously now though.

So the board need to make a decision and sell that decision to the supporters. Personally I just don’t know what the right one is and I don’t envy them having to make this choice.

However, is it anyway going to be that crucial who’s in charge out of this group without a summer of quality signings? In truth Everton need to get it done so we can try and move forward again. Maybe they should just put the names in a hat and have Farhad just pick one out?!
